Amalgamation

for violin and orchestra

Amalgamation is a violin concerto that blends Persian, Assyrian, Western classical, Jazz, and Blues influences into a single narrative. It features the Persian classical form of Morakab-Navazi. Amalgamation uses Persian classical Gushe Shekaste from the Dastgâh-e Mâhur, Arabic classical Maqam Rast, Âvâz-e Dashti from the Dastgâh-e Shur, and Shushtari from the Dastgâh-e Homâyun, all of which utilize microtonal tuned intervals, intertwined with Western classical music, the spontaneity of Jazz, and the soulfulness of Blues. In this piece, the violin represents an individual absorbing multiple heritages, both through ancestry and a deep appreciation for different musical traditions. As the violin navigates these varied soundscapes, it mirrors the complexity of personal growth and transformation in an increasingly interconnected world. Amalgamation invites listeners to explore their own unique experiences with cultural identities through music while also reflecting the journey of embracing and participating in a cultural musical identity that transcends one's own ancestry.
